Injection

Injection

What is the Injection?

The contraceptive injection protects you against pregnancy for 8 weeks or 12 weeks depending on the type you use.

There are two versions:

  • Depo-Provera – which lasts for 12 weeks and is the most popular;
  • Noristerat – which lasts for 8 weeks.

How it works

The injection contains progestogen. Progestogen thickens the mucus in the neck of the womb which stops sperm reaching an egg. It also thins the lining of the womb so that an egg cannot implant itself there.

In most women the injection stops ovulation (the release of an egg).
